Value:
The density of your keyword as found in a specific area of your page (i.e.: body,
title, meta description, etc.).
Background:
Also known as “Keyword Weight”, this term refers to the percentage of words in a
specified text that contain your keyword. It is one of the many factors that search
engines use to determine whether or not a keyword is relevant to the content of
your page.
Example #1:
Let’s say your page title contained only four words “Big Blue Sky Dome” and your
keyword was “Sky Dome”. The keyword density for this phrase would be 50%. If we
then changed your keyword to “Blue Sky Dome”, the density would increase to a value
of 75%. In other words, the text “Blue Sky Dome” is 75% of the complete title text
“Big Blue Sky Dome”.
Example #2:
Your page body contains the following text “cat dog chicken fish cat”. Let’s assume
your keyword is “cat”. There are five words total, giving each word a value of 20%.
Since the word “cat” occurs twice, the keyword density would be “40%” (2 x 20%).
Tip #1:
Adding text other than your keyword (or key phrase) to a specific area of your page
will decrease keyword density, while adding additional occurrences of your keyword
will increase it.
Tip #2:
If your potential customer often searches for a specific phrase such as “running
shoes”, you will want a page that the search engines see as relevant for this topic.
Tip #3:
Be careful not to make your keyword density too high, or you may be penalized for
spamming. This could cause you to have decreased web site rankings.
